What is the CalGovHR Labor Relations & Negotiations Institute?
Uniquely developed by CalGovHR, California’s leading and premier organization dedicated to the support of public sector and nonprofit HR professionals and their career growth, the Labor Relations & Negotiations Institute offers an in-depth training and “hands on” training experience for those who are interested in learning the different aspects of labor relations, including an overview of the various labor relations statutes, what a memorandum of understanding (MOU) consists of, the labor negotiations process, grievances and arbitration, how mediation works to resolve labor disputes, unfair labor practices, and concerted activity and strikes.
In addition, union side instructors will also provide pointers on tips in achieving collaborative management-labor relationships, understanding how unions work, and their unique perspectives when disagreements occur, so attendees walk away with a balanced and complete perspective of effective labor relations.
As a “uniquely CalGovHR” program, our Institute faculty was carefully selected based upon their legal/HR experience and expertise, and they offer both the technical and practical knowledge needed to succeed as a public sector HR professional.
In addition, this program offers a unique mock arbitration experience, where attendees will gain “hands on” experience working as either a labor or management advocate, and work with the faculty to put on a mock arbitration, presided by a real-life arbitrator!
The faculty consists of attorneys with many years of experience who will work with attendees in small groups to take part in the mock arbitration, so you will walk away with an “almost real life” experience to gain a complete understanding of how arbitration really works.
Throughout the training, there will also be other small group exercises where attendees can practice their negotiating skills, resolving disputes, and utilizing mediation to get to “yes.”
What Sets This Institute Apart from Other Technical HR Training?
Topics & Schedule
The Institute offers three days of consecutive and intensive training on virtually all topics related to labor relations. In addition, there will be plenty of opportunities for “hands on” experience, as you will be working in small groups alongside our experienced faculty. Plus, enjoy the professional networking to connect with your classmates and faculty in a fun, encouraging and supportive learning environment!

For the first-time in CalGovHR’s history, we will be hosting the training in fabulous Las Vegas. We chose this location because it’s one of the world’s most famous and iconic cities, offering a host of possibilities including convenient access via Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) and car travel, proximity to Southern California, world-class amenities, fine dining, shopping, entertainment and fun. All of these factors contribute to an excellent learning atmosphere where you will be making lifelong professional connections while taking in all the amazing opportunities Las Vegas has to offer.
On the Strip, you can take a spin on the world’s largest observation wheel, the High Roller, ride on a Venetian gondola or watch the iconic Fountains of Bellagio. Away from the Strip, Las Vegas has an collection of acclaimed museums covering atomic testing, neon signs and the mob--topics deeply connected to the city. Outside of the city, the Mojave Desert is filled with hiking and biking trails, scenic drives and expansive desert vistas. Learn more about all the attractions the city has to offer here.
